blast furnace no.3
Another one monument of decaying german metallurgy is pretty well preserved construction of blast furnace no.3 of former "Henrichshütte", which was founded in 1854 within Hattingen town.
Self-contained production complex of pig iron and steel was giving work for over ten thousand people throughout few generations. This continuity was broken forever in 1987 and the steel-mill was despite of massive protests shut down due to gradual heavy industry decentralization to the western part of Ruhrgebiet.
The oldest remaining blast furnace in this region is now open for public within Hattingen industrial museum.
