Lorraine, until 2005 one of two most important industrial regions in France was within his history ruled by forrests of headframes and blast furnaces. Today, in 2011, silent roaring of mines and fizzing of metalurgical plants died away forever. Industrial genius loci is now remembered only by rows of workers settlements and overgrowned dumps with last 12 abandoned or reused mining sites. Only very few european localities went through such a dramatical landscape change as Lorraine during past 20 years


The oldest extant mining relict of Lorraine is puits St.Marthe. Atypical malakow shaft-building was built in 1852 already and was part of "Mines de Houille de Stiring". In use until 1975, now preserved as a technical monument.
