Iron smelting is related to Donawitz location since 1436, where the first iron-mill was established here.
Another crucial tourning-point, building of Donawitz-Vordenberg railway in 1878, reduced raw material transport costs and initiated first open hearth shop construction. A coke plant was built soon after.
Rail and beam rolling mill was constructed in 1892 and the whole plant became the centre of smelting in the monarchy.
Until 1912 the mill was the largest steel producing facility on the Continent.
Together with rise of new technologies after the second world war a brand new steel plant was built with two 30t converters and 500t hot metal mixer.
